Whale Watching in the North of Peru – A Route of Giants

Between the months of July and October of every year, around five thousand humpback whales reach the Peruvian sea. If you ask yourself, what is the reason? The males come to perform mating rituals, this ritual consists of jumping with impressive turns, in which the humpback whale concentrates all its strength, managing, sometimes, to suspend its entire body out of the water. The sounds emitted by the humpback whales to attract their next mate can be heard up to 300 km behind the meeting point, forming phrases that repeat every 5 to 35 minutes. The average weight of these impressive cetaceans is 30 tons.

An additional fact about these magnificent animals is that they adopt the name of ‘humpbacks’ by the arch that forms their spinal column, this is achieved by immersing themselves in the water. The turns and jumps that this species makes also call them ‘ballerina whales or singers’.

The Peruvian north is privileged to see this show and you can have the opportunity in a tour, of approximately three hours, from the beaches of El Ñuro, Máncora, Cabo Blanco, Los Órganos or Punta Sal. Upon entering the Peruvian sea and approaching the point of sighting, you will have the luck to observe groups of dolphins swimming or giving naughty jumps a few meters away from your boat, welcoming you. In addition to watching the curious sea lions and turtles, you will be able to see the whales. You can feel the great emotion that these mammals awaken in you with the spectacular jumps and thumps. If you re lucky, you will be able to cath the new borns playing among eachother, showing the beauty of nature. Part of the great experience is to be able to listen to the sound emitted by the whales, a song of love, and that Peruvians and foreigners are invited to enjoy.
